The St. Vincent Parrot: A Familiar Friend

Posted by in Birds,Endangered,Historical,Spotlight on Species

Written by Bird Keepers Rene Ryan, Danny Keel and Mollie Coym

The Houston Zoo has played host to the St. Vincent Parrot since 1968.  Our first resident was an outgoing young female named “Vincent”.  She was later paired up with a male and housed in the Tropical Bird House for all guests to experience.  We are proud to have achieved, with help from “Vincent”, the first successful captive hatch (worldwide, mind you!) on April 25, 1972.  The zoo has played an important role for this species ever since.

This Houston Chronicle article from 1970 featured the first St. Vincent Amazons at the Houston Zoo.

Our most recent hatch, “Vincent Deuxieme”, occurred on May 28, 2008.  She was  hand-raised by Bird Department Supervisor Chris Holmes and the Bird Staff, which entails hand feeding every two hours from sun up to sun down.  Her moniker was borrowed from the female who started it all.  “Vincent” is currently living the good life next to her parents in our Off Exhibit Facilities.

The Houston Zoo made headlines in 2008 as we welcomed the hatching of Vincent Deuxieme

To learn more about this exotic and fascinating species and their history here at the Houston Zoo, join us on Sunday, September 4th at the St. Vincent building (near Stormy the bird bank) for our Spotlight on the Species.  Keepers will be hosting fun activities, providing information and answering any questions you may have about this special parrot from 11 AM until 3 PM.

Young Professionals Flock to the Houston Zoo for Wild Events

Posted by in African Forest,Events,Flock

Young professionals are Flocking to the Houston Zoo for some entertaining events tucked between the Zoo’s “wild” exhibits. Flock members have the chance to mix and mingle, have close encounters with the animals and learn more about how they can help with wildlife conservation and education locally and internationally.

One of the live animal encounters at our Flock Events

Flock was an idea that took off in 2009. “We wanted to create a donor club for younger individuals who loved the Zoo and who were committed to the stewardship and growth of the Houston Zoo. Flock strives to inspire new generations of Houston Zoo supporters by creating unique events that are not only fun, but educational as well.” said Nick Espinosa, Senior Director of Development.

Events from past years include, Pick Your Poison, inside the Reptile House and an 80’s themed party, Flock of Seagulls at the Zoo’s Cypress Circle. This year Flock members have enjoyed two events, the Beastly Brunch and most recently One Wild Night in Africa.

At One Wild Night in Africa, Flock members had the opportunity to tour the new McGovern Giraffe Barn. Guests fed our giraffe herd lettuce, and got close enough to see their long eyelashes. Some guests found out just how long a giraffe’s tongue really is (18 inches) as the giraffes reached for their treat. The Zoo’s conservation team was on hand to talk about the conservation efforts in Africa and the importance of actions needed to protect endangered species. Event goers sipped on beer, generously donated by St. Arnolds while munching on burritos handed out by Freebirds at the African Forest Plaza.

These unique animal meet and greets are part of what make Flock such an amazing donor club. Flock encourages its members to get involved.  “It is important to have young professionals from the Houston area that have a passion for wildlife, conservation and the environment involved with the Zoo. Flock events provide up close and very special experiences with our Zoo Ambassadors. We hope it will inspire our members to get involved with wildlife conservation and enviroment causes, locally and internationally.” said Sarah Atwood, Director of Development.

With an annual donation of $150, Flock members not only receive free admission to three cocktail events, but will also receive free admission to the Houston Zoo, 364 days a year, and opportunities for exclusive Zoo travel, volunteering and discounted tickets for friends and family, and many other benefits!

Don’t miss our next event, Fast and Ferocious, on Thursday, August 18, 2011  from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Momentum Audi.

We would like to thank Momentum Audi for their continued support of Flock and the Houston Zoo. Special thanks go out to event sponsors; St. Arnolds, Yelp, Beaver’s, Houston magazine, Cordúa Restaurants, and El Xuco Xicana. Posted by in Birds,Endangered,Spotlight on Species

Cassowaries can clear a six foot jump.  Can YOU jump as high as a cassowary? What about a rat, or a flea? The only way to find out is to visit the zoo next Saturday!

On July 23rd the Houston Zoo is hosting our first Cassowary Spotlight on the Species event from 9 AM to 4 PM, where guests can participate in games, hang out with the cassowary keepers, win prizes, and learn about Darwin, our very own Double-wattled Cassowary!

In the cassowary exhibit area, you will be able to play games like Pin the Wattle on the Cassowary and a very special version of Candy Land.  You can watch a training demonstration, or giggle as Darwin enjoys a shower in his exhibit!

Prizes will be raffled off, and you will have the opportunity to purchase some very special home-made animal items such as some castings of Darwin’s prehistoric footprints, or Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Artwork, and photography courtesy of our very own talented zookeepers!

All proceeds will go towards purchasing critical cassowary habitat that is currently tagged for commercial and residential development. As habitat fragmentation is the biggest threat to dwindling wild cassowary populations, every bit of habitat is crucial to their survival!

Stop by and see us, grab yourself a ‘I Heart Cassowary’ sticker and get familiar with one of the coolest animals at the zoo!

Department/Title:  Manager of Special Events

How long have you worked at the Houston Zoo?:  15 months

How long have you been in the your field?:  6 years

Favorite animal:  Big cats – especially Lions

Quote:  “Two Roads diverged in the wood, and I –
I took the one less traveled by.”
Robert Frost – A Road Not Traveled

Special interests/hobbies:  Traveling – I’ve been fortunate enough to have already visited over 20 countries, working out, being outdoors, hiking, canoeing.  My family is Italian, so I lived in Rome for part of my childhood and again after I graduated from college.

What made you want to work at a zoo?:  I wanted to work for a non-profit organization instead of a large corporation.  The zoo offers a great opportunity for people in my field because there aren’t a lot of positions specifically geared to planning a variety of special events.

Education/training:  B.A. in Organizational communication and media studies from the University of the Pacific with a minor in philosophy.

Previous related jobs:  I worked for the Museum of Fine Arts for several years then went abroad to Rome to work as a special events coordinator for a large events company.  I am fluent in Italian and can understand French and some Spanish.

Advice to anyone wanting to enter the your field:  Be organized, a quick thinker, and good under pressure.  Think outside the box and think ahead for potential mishaps and resolutions.  You want to be able to turn a bad situation into a positive one!

Something you want people to know about yourself or your position at the zoo:  Please don’t kill the messenger! Our department is just a middle man for either external clients or other zoo departments.  We are here to make everyone happy and that sometimes means asking for things even if we know the deadline has passed.  We feel as though it never hurts to ask, the worst that can happen is someone says no.  We do lots of different types of events, from internal events to fundraisers, 5k walks, corporate receptions, weddings, birthdays and many other events.  We coordinate events like Zooball, Zoobilee, Enrichment Day, Conservation Day, and many more!  If someone requires a table or chairs, we’re involved.  Just remember we are always here for you!

Hometown:  Midland, TX

Department/Title:  Special Events

How long have you worked at the Houston Zoo?:  1 year

Favorite animal:  I love them all, but enjoy the Meerkats.  They are the animals I see most often since they are next to several special events venues.  They never fail to put a smile on my face.

Special interests/Hobbies:  Working out, being outside, traveling, reading about WWII strategies and events.

Education/Training:  B.S. from Texas A & M in Political Science and History

Advice to anyone wanting to enter the your field:  Be a good communicator, proactive, and know how to multi-task!  This job involves meeting and talking to a lot of people with various backgrounds, so it helps to be a people person and easily approachable.  Be prepared for crazy hours and cautious not to step on toes.

Favorite Events- so far:
Gainer Donnelly and Desroches Event –  This was a very rewarding event because it was a lot of hard work and the zoo just looked magnificent.
Flock Events – They are just full of great people with lots of energy and a ton of fun
Bar mitzvah Event – There was one in particular that I got to know the people very well.  It was great to see their dream realized.

Something you want people to know about yourself or your position at the zoo:  We have done around 200 events so far this year and estimate doing about 400 total.  About 75% of our job is working with clients.  Most of our requests are on behalf of others.  What that means is that it’s our job to ask.  We are here to make sure everyone is happy and things go as smoothly as possible.  Remember that we are happy to help and are always here for you!

See all of our venue options or contact the Zoo’s Events department at 713.533.6833, for details of Zoo rentals and programs.
