That Puppet is Traveling Again! Week 8

Posted by in Birds,Conservation,Contest,Spotlight on Species

For weeks now, I’ve been writing about the wonderful biodiversity of the Philippines.  Did you know you can see witness some of that biodiversity just by visiting the Houston Zoo?

In the bird department alone we have:

Palawan Peacock Pheasants

Emerald Doves

Nicobar Pigeons

Black-naped Fruit Doves

Pied Imperial Pigeons

Luzon Bleeding Heart Doves

Chestnut-breasted Malkohas

White-throated Kingfishers

Japanese White-eyes

Please visit the zoo on May 5th and 6th to help us celebrate the beautiful animals of the Philippines and the majesty of raptors!  We will als be featuring our own birds of prey with several species of owl, hawks, and Liberty, our Bald Eagle!

Time for another installment of Where in the World is Jeffery?  Please leave a caption for the first photo for a chance to win an extra 8 points!

Recently, Jeffery visited the only Southeast Asian country that has never been taken over by a European power.

An elephant?!

Where am I?

There will be no wrap up blog this Friday the 23rd, as I will be traveling…with the puppet.  There WILL be another contest blog on Monday the 26th!

Have You Met Liberty, Our Bald Eagle?

Posted by in Birds,Children's Zoo,Holidays

With the 4th of July coming up, why not pay a visit to our National Bird?

Meet Liberty, our Southern Bald Eagle

Come to the Houston Zoo’s McGovern’s Children’s Zoo and say hello to our majestic Bald Eagle. The Eagle was adapted as the nation’s official symbol when George Washington became the first President. It appears on most of our gold and silver coins and as an emblem in many official United States seals. It’s also used decoratively for patriotic purposes. It’s truly breathtaking to see such a striking bird as this up close, and hard not to be stirred by all he represents.

What’s New? Liberty’s Exhibit!

We’ve been very busy working to improve and enlarge Liberty’s habitat.

A new window has been added to maximize your view — and you’ll see Liberty has new perching, an improved, naturalistic pool and a refurbished forest mural as a backdrop.

The deck has been expanded and now has ceiling fans, a shade structure, beautifully crafted, wood-like detailing through out, and eye-catching new graphics.

What’s more, a new keeper chat area has been added so that we can bring Liberty out for up-close experiences!

It’s pretty awesome to get that close to a bird whose species is so stunning, it was chosen to be our national emblem on June 20, 1782. The eagle represents freedom, and also long life, strength, dignity.

What are you waiting for? Come in to the McGovern’s Children’s Zoo to pay Liberty a visit today!

Feeling patriotic?  What more perfect thing to do over the 4th of July weekend than to come to our McGovern’s Children’s Zoo to see, up close and without obstruction of mesh or glass, our striking national symbol — Liberty, the Southern Bald Eagle.

Liberty, the Houston Zoo's majestic, dignified Southern Bald Eagle

Adapted as the official symbol when George Washington became the first President, the Eagle  appears on most of our gold and silver coins and as an emblem in many of official United States seals. It’s also used decoratively for many patriotic purposes.

The Bald Eagle was chosen for it’s appearance of strength and represents freedom. You might get a little choked up to see her. Our viewing deck is raised so you are often eye to eye.

This weekend might be a little rainy, but it’s  a great thing to do throughout July.  Come to think of it, why not just make her part of your visit anytime of the year?

If you’ve seen Liberty yourself, are a fan of the Bald Eagle, or are feeling partiotic as we approach the weeken, please tell us and all your fellow readers about it in the comments section below.  It’s easy, and we’d love to hear from you!
