Posted by in Birds,Contest,Spotlight on Species

This year the Philippine Eagle Foundation celebrates their 25th annivesary!  Go visit them  and say thanks for saving the world’s coolest eagle!

Ready for this week’s installment of our traveling Philippine Eagle puppet contest?  Don’t forget to add a caption for a shot at the extra 8 points!

Owned by The National Audubon Society, this special place boasts the last remaining large stand of native sabal palms in the nation; and is one of the most biologically diverse areas in Texas.

Now where am I?

Remember last Friday I revealed those adorable birds as part of the contest prize?  Well, try this on for cute:

A Puppet in Florence, a Renaissance Story! Week 3 Rankings!

Posted by in Birds,Contest,Spotlight on Species,Uncategorized

"Which way to the Boboli Gardens? My Italian sweetheart is waiting on the statue of Neptune!"

This competition is really heating up!  You were all correct, Jeffery did indeed make it to Florence, Italy.

As we recently celebrated Valentine’s Day, I thought it might be fitting to tell you that humans can learn quite a bit about relationships from the Philippine Eagle!  Check out this article, written by staff at the Philippine Eagle Foundation about how these magnificent birds pair up, court, and care for their young!

Also, as a little added incentive, I thought I’d show you another one of the prizes that will be included:

A flock of these colorful eco-friendly birds (they’re stuffed with plastic bags) will be included in the winner’s prize basket!

Now, on to the rankings!

Last week the standings were:

Tess with 20 points

Melissa  with 15 points

Paul with 12 points

Wendy with 8 points

Carmen with 7 points

Linda  with 2 points

After week 3 in Florence, the standings are:

Tess with 27 points total

Melissa with 25 points total

Paul with 17 points total

Carmen earned 8 points for her caption and now has a total of 15 points

Linda with 4 points total

Liz Turner came in at the wire, but didn’t get on the board this week.  We hope to see you next week, Liz!

Once again, choosing the caption was really tough!  I loved Tess’ caption, because we really do need a rebirth of the Philippine Eagle species, and speaking of art and eagles, have you checked out our friends at Jeepney Projects Worldwide???

Ultimately, we had to choose Carmen’s romantic entry, during this week of St. Valentine’s Day!

The next photo will go up at 10 AM Central this Monday, February 20th.  We haven’t even scratched the surface of Jeffery’s adventures yet!

Where in the World is Jeffery? Week 2!

Don’t forget to add a caption!  If your caption wins, there’s an extra 8 points in it for you!

Please leave all answers and captions in the comment box directly below this blog!

Based on the children’s book Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey, this sculpture can be found in what city?

The sculpture is so popular, a replica was installed in Moscow as a gift from Barbara Bush to Soviet First Lady Raisa Gorbachev!

Imagine your caption here!

Many people think the Harpy Eagle is the largest eagle in the world, and many people are incorrect.  The Harpy Eagle is most often regarded as the world’s heaviest eagle, and even so, the Steller’s Sea Eagle often grabs that record.

Read this great article about specimen comparisons of the world’s largest species of eagle–I’m betting you can guess which eagle comes out on top!

Did you think the prize we revealed last week was painfully cute?

These knitted owls were made by our very talented volunteer Margaret.  Did you know that our volunteers and staff aren’t the only talented beings at the zoo? A variety of small animal paintings, complete with information on each artist, will be included in the winner’s prize basket!  This contest keeps getting better and better!

Introducing Jeffery, and a New Contest That Will Take You Around the World!

Posted by in Birds,Contest,Spotlight on Species

So maybe the title is a little misleading.  I am introducing a puppet named Jeffery, but this contest won’t literally take you around the world; you’ll have to use your imaginations for that!

DISCLAIMER: You cannot win around the world tickets in this contest!

As many of you know, the keepers at the Houston Zoo often get together to present the public with Spotlight on the Species events.  This program allows keepers to bring their most cherished conservation causes to the public.  Lion Fun Day, Vulture Awareness Day, Howler-ween and Pollinator Weekends are just a few of the SOS events we’ve recently hosted.

This year, on the first weekend of May, we’re kicking it up a notch!  Three, count them, THREE different zoo departments are coming together to bring you the Birds of Prey Days!

Ever wanted to meet an eagle face to face or wonder just how far a hawk can see? Want owls hanging out in your yard? Would you like to learn about falconry, which has been practiced for approximately FOUR THOUSAND years?? Throughout the following months, we will provide you with more specifics about our event, but right now, I’d like to tell you about the Philippine Eagle Foundation.

The raptor populations of Texas are robust and thriving, but this isn’t the case all over the world. Take a look at this gorgeous bird:

Not only this this the largest AND most endangered eagle in the world, but in my professional opinion, it’s also the most beautiful.  Since 2008, the bird department has been raising funds for the Philippine Eagle Foundation and with our SOS, we’d like to bring the eagle to the people of Houston.

Unfortunately, there are no Philippine Eagles anywhere in the States, but that hasn’t stopped us!  Our very talented bird supervisor, Rene Ryan, made Jeffery, the traveling Philippine Eagle puppet.  Since September of last year, Jeffery has been traveling around the world with zoo staff, getting ready to promote this Bird of Prey Spotlight on the Species!

Check out this HANDSOME puppet:

See the resemblance???

Now, on to the contest!  Each Monday morning at 10 AM, a photo of Jeffery will be posted, and with the aid of some hints, our blog followers will have to guess where in the world Jeffery is! Jeffery’s already been to a handful of continents, countries and states!

The first to guess correctly will earn 10 points. The second, 7 points and the third 5 points. Fourth place will receive 2 points.  The comment time stamp will confirm the quickness of your answers!

But wait, there’s a twist! Have you missed our FOTO Fridays?  The best caption for the featured photo (to be decided by zoo staff) will earn a whopping 8 points!

Unlike FOTO Friday, please leave your caption as a comment on the contest blog posted on Mondays, not on Facebook.

Here’s a quick example of what Monday’s posts will look like:

According to legend, William B. Travis drew a line in the dirt for troops to cross over to certain death at this famous historical site.

Where in the world is Jeffery?

Contestants would then race to answer (sorry, not all photos will be this easy to place!), and brush up their funny bones to attempt to win the photo caption round!  Friday morning at 10 AM, all will be revealed, as well as contestant rankings!

What’s in it for you?

The winner will receive a goody basket full of our handmade items which will be for sale during the event, as well as Philippine Eagle art and merchandise.  This prize will be amazing, and throughout the next few months, we will reveal photos of the contents, but for right now, trust me, you want it!

The contest begins Monday, January 30th, 2012!

You do not have to live in Houston to participate, but no Houston Zoo staff are allowed to enter.

Spotlight on Species: Vultures!

Posted by in Birds,Spotlight on Species

Did you know the Houston Zoo has a pair of Cinereous vultures? They are located right across from the furthest elephant habitat, which is next to our okapis. They have big bodies and cool blue heads.  We also have King vultures in our Fischer bird garden closer to where our sea lions are.

If you haven’t been, you have to come meet them. And to that end, on Saturday, December 3 we’re having a very special day that you might just want to check out! Visit our website for a chedule of Keeper Talks, games and activities.

One of our two cinereous vultures, with their beautiful bright blue coloring

While turkey and black vultures seem so abundant to us here, vulture species around the world range from threatened to critically endangered. By spotlighting our ambassador species of King and Cinereous vultures here at the Houston Zoo, we can bring the ongoing plight to the attention of the public.

The King vulture

The Cambodia Vulture Conservation Project has been since 2004 to restore a healthy population of the three species of critically endangered species of vultures found there.  They are currently the only Asian country to have an increase in their numbers. All proceeds from The Houston Zoo’s celebration of International Vulture Awareness Day will go towards helping them continue to fight the battle.

Come by the vulture enclosure on Saturday, December 3 to enjoy interactive activities for  kids of all ages, as well as educational keeper chats and feedings.

It’s “Howlerween” Time Again!

Posted by in Primates,Spotlight on Species,Wortham World of Primates

The Houston Zoo Primate Department is gearing up for the 3rd annual “Howlerween” celebration this October. The purpose is to help to raise awareness about Wildtracks and the illegal pet trade that surrounds Howler Monkeys.

The Yucatán Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta pigra) is one of the many primates listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red list.  This species, which is native to Central America, faces numerous threats that contribute to this status.

One of the top threats these monkeys face includes the illegal pet trade which is often times a by-product of hunting these animals for the sale of bush meat in local and international markets. Confiscation of Black Howler Monkeys from the pet trade is overwhelming the Belize Forest Department and the Belize Zoo.  As a viable alternative to leaving these illegally procured monkeys with their owners, confiscated pets are being transferred to a non-profit organization called Wildtracks, operated by Paul and Zoe Walker.  You can visit the Wildtracks website and also their Facebook Page.

Wildtracks rehabilitates these former pets and reintroduces them into the wild forests of northern Belize.  Primate keepers Rachel Vass and Helen Boostrom visited Belize in June and spent time working at Wildtracks with some of these rehabilitated monkeys. You can read their awesome blog posts on the Houston Zoo’s Wild Conservation Blog!

Throughout the entire month of Howlerween, there will be special Howler Monkey Meet the Keeper Talks everyday at 3:30. “Howlerween” will coincide with Zoo Boo from 9am to 3pm both days inside Wortham World of Primates near the Howler Monkey exhibit.  Then on the weekend of October 22-23 we will be holding a Spotlight on Species event which will include educational activities, Howler Monkey keeper chats at 10:00, 2:00, and 3:30, and a variety of merchandise that will be on sale to help raise money for Wildtracks.

Visit our website to learn all the details about our special Howlerween Spotlight on Species weekend on October 22-23, located in our Wortham World of Primates. Please come out and visit us for a howling good time!

St. Vincent Parrots: Who’s Who at the Houston Zoo

Posted by in Birds,Spotlight on Species

One important part of animal care at any zoo is being able to know which animal is which.  In the bird department, where many birds look the same, we accomplish this through leg bands – small plastic or metal bands with different letters and numbers that fit around the leg like a bracelet.  Some larger birds like the St. Vincent Amazon Parrots also have a small, permanent microchip that can be scanned with a special device, much like scanning groceries at the self-checkout line at the grocery store.

But the St.Vincent Parrots have one other way that keepers use more often that the rest: they can be told apart by the pattern of colors on their faces.  Like the human fingerprint, the pattern of each parrot’s face is unique.

Chatoyer

Bequia

For example, the above two birds live in the same enclosure.  Female “Bequia” has a solid yellow face with broad areas of yellow and white wrapping all the way around under and over her eyes.  Her mate “Chatoyer” has much more blue on his face, in particular a large faint blue area under his eyes starting at this base of his beak and blue directly behind and above his eyes.  Can you see the difference?

To learn how keepers tell the rest of the St. Vincent Amazon Parrot flock apart, join us for our Spotlight on Species on Sunday, September 4th from 11 AM until 3 PM at the St. Vincent building (near Stormy the bird bank).
