On April 12, NASA will announce the future homes for the retiring space shuttle orbiters. The Greater Houston Partnership is leading an effort to bring one of the shuttles to Houston. After all, Houston is the home of the Johnson Space Center and mission control. The astronauts live and train in Houston. Much of NASA’s work today is still based from Houston.
If you’d like to see Houston become home to one of the retiring orbiters, please visit www.bringtheshuttlehome.com. You can also j oin fellow Houstonians, Elected Officials and Community Leaders for a Bring the Shuttle Home Rally on Wednesday, April 6 at 12:30 p.m. in Hermann Square @ City Hall.
Why is the Houston Zoo getting involved? Well, there are several reasons. For one, Houstonians have supported the Houston Zoo for 88 years.
For another, the Houston Zoo prides itself as an education resource for Houston and our guests. Having a retired orbiter here would be an incredible educational opportunity for people of all ages.
And, in 2005 NASA’s Johnson Space Center donated several acres for the Zoo to establish a breeding facility for the endangered Attwater’s prairie chicken. The partnership has allowed the Zoo to greatly enhance and expand its breeding program and we are grateful for our NASA partnership.
