About Beth Schaefer

Beth Schaefer

Beth has worked in the field of animal care since 1985. She started as a veterinary assistant, moved to exotic animal care as a keeper aide, then a keeper, eventually progressing to her current job as a curator at the Houston Zoo. Her career has taken her from the tiny 3 acre Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero, California to the Kansas City Zoo, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and the Center for Great Apes in Florida, finally arriving in Houston in 2007.

Much of her career has been spent with great apes and sea lions, although she encountered many other critters along the way such as birds of prey, cheetahs and even rhinos. She is now enjoying the challenge and rewards of working with the diverse collection in Natural Encounters and, of course, the fun loving sea lions.
