About Andrea Pohlman

As a child growing up, we always had many different pets to care for at home. My mom grew up on a farm, and as a result we housed a miniature zoo! My first pet was actually a tarantula that I found when I was just 3 years old and carried back to my slightly startled mother, who, for some reason, agreed to keep it. I don’t even know what kind it was! Years later, after my first pet passed away, I started keeping rats as pets. I remember carrying my pet rat across the street to the park and building tunnels and little hills in the sand for her to climb all over. As long as I can remember, I have always had an interest in every animal I learned about. Now at the Zoo, I work mostly behind the scenes in the Children’s Zoo with reptiles and birds. I find them the most fascinating and personable in a very different way than mammals. If you ask me what my favorite animal is, I will have about 10 different answers. I love Ernie the porcupine, Rainbo the Eclectus Parrot, Peep the goat, Gorn the Tegu….well, the list goes on and on! Now I enjoy sharing my fascination of animals with guests I interact with every day. Whether it be a keeper chat with Rainbo or Gorn, presenting Ernie to the crowd during a show, or training Peep in the Goat Contact Area, I am always excited to share my passion and knowledge with everyone I meet.
