Almost all of us drink from aluminum cans…but do all of us recycle them?
Did you know that aluminum cans are what’s known as a sustainable metal, meaning it can be recycled not just once, but again and again? And it’s unique in that it can go through the recycling process and be back in stores in new use in as little as 60 days! So how much of a difference could you make if you made that extra little effort to recycle yours? A LOT!
We make it easier than ever to do this at the zoo with our new recycling bins. They’re easy to spot because they look like big silver bottles, and there are 100 of them all through the Zoo.
Larry Cummings, a staff member at Earth911.com wrote an informative, easy-to-read fact sheet that you can find HERE to learn much more.
I make the effort to recycle all my aluminum. I even pick them up when I see them laying somewhere, and stash them in a bag in my car to take the next time I drive to my local recycling facility. Why bother? Think about it… besides saving the planet’s precious metals and energy, you are also contributing to preserving natural habitats that the animals we all love need to live in. That’s all the motivation I require, but it also makes me feel good to do it. And that part is priceless.
Isn’t that a great reason to make the effort? Not just on one day, but most days, if not every day?

Such a good example the zoo is setting…thanks for helping get the message out !
This is a wonderful idea to do in a public facility. All attractions and public places need to take the Houston Zoo’s lead. Thank you for informing all those who may otherwise have not known of this.
Love that the Zoo is now recycling ! It is about time
The new bins are certainly eye catching and hope everyone who visits the zoo will use them.
very informative, thank you so much for all the helpful tips. you have helped to raise awareness!
Thank you!
Always great to be reminded, it is the little things that we can do to help our animal friends that can make the difference for them and for our planet.
I learned that aluminum cans are recycled over and over. Never really thought about more than once. Many places are now offering places for cans seperately from other waste materials and glad that the zoo is now helping the planet.
Great new recycling containers! The will surely catch everyones attention and lead them to be a bit more careful with their bottles and cans. We all need to pay attention to the Mother, with Earth Day almost upon us, she has been a bit shakey lately!!!
Thanks for making it easier and easier to recycle. When you see cans side by side it’s easy to toss things in the right bins and keep on moving. You are always so informative with your posts!
Wow! I never realized you could recycle aluminum over and over. I was so excited I read this to my son. Glad to see what the zoo is doing. Can’t wait to see the new bins in person.
If only every public facility could take the lead of the Houston Zoo! I am seeing more and more recycling containers for both water bottles and aluminum, so we are progressing in our efforts -
I can’t wait to forward this link to friends in Houston. Thanks for the terrific information.

Thank you for this important message. You cannot stress enough the benefits of recycling. The creative recycling bins are a great way to get not only adults, but children to recycle! Thanks for your post!!!
Bravo to the zoo for providing the new recycling bins! I imagine this will make a significant contribution to lowering the amount of recyclable materials that end up in our landfills.
