What a great story! I never knew orangatans painted, though I've been to Thailand, north of Chaing Mai, and have watched several elephants painting pictures: flowers, elephants, even an elephant mounting another one, believe it or not! It was amazing. I'd love to see the Houston Zoo animal artists. Maybe next time I'm in the area . . .

Thought I had posted earlier Rochelle, but it isn't showing up. So here I am again. I enjoyed the article and the paintings. They are amazing. Thanks for letting us share a little bit of it.

How I envy those that can see these animals paint. What a treat that would be. Wish I could afford to purchase a painting. Another fine article by Ms. Joseph. What a treasure you have in her.

I really didn't think the art would be so balanced...these you show are actually lovely.
Were you right in with the animals? Or watching from close-up, but still not physically
with them...I would be entranced...but a bit scared, I think...Just another connection, however, to
their closeness to the human being. They express themselves with color and materials. I really enjoy your stories. Love the animals.

i love it that animals are painting as part of their 'daily enrichment' as you say. that is a facinating concept; it makes me wonder how it makes them feel. i should be painting or crafting more often-not to be outdone by an orangutan.
