In the last post we told you all about what the cheetahs get for breakfast, so now its time to deliver.
You’ll see that the cheetahs are excited to get their breakfast each morning and we use this as part of their training to get them to come inside. The great outdoors is way more interesting but sometimes we need to lock them in the barn to get work done or if there is bad weather. If they always get a big bowl of food inside, then INSIDE=GOOD TIMES and they are eager to come for us each day.
And now its Kiburi’s turn
Next time: Cleaning the yard. Hopefully the Smell-O-Vision will be up and running by then.

Seeing cheetahs eating and behaving like dogs in their kennels getting breakfast almost makes you forget how wild and fast and NOT like dogs they can be!
They all just want their noms! om nom nom nom!
These behind the scenes clips are wonderful! I loved watching him pet Taji. Such happy pooches! The Anatolians are such great dogs! I don’t think I will ever be without one, since having one! So smart, eager to learn, eager to please, and love their jobs!
That is so awesome. I love watching all the big cats. Would love to win tickets as I have been in Houston for 14 years and haven’t been to the zoo yet. Which is really strange cause I love zoos.
Thanks for all you do!!!
Oh, just like big kitties! How I’d love to work at the zoo! Why didn’t I get my degree in something animal related??
We’d love to win tickets!
I was scared when I first saw the dog. I thought the dog was going to be breakfast. Glad to know he wasn’t on the menu.
I love the zoo… I go every year for my birthday!! It’s awesome! Would love to win tickets! =)
That was amazing! My son is in love with zoo. We spent about 30 minutes just at the Giraffe exhibit the last time we were there which was about a year ago.
We are never disappointed when we go and ending the day with a train ride is perfect!
I don’t know if I could feed breakfast to a Cheetah! that kid is brave. I’m sure they are secure and safe.
Why is the Taji there? Companion animal???
I love behind the scenes with the animals we get to see while at the zoo. They are so well cared for and loved!
Wow, for a minute I thought he was in the same cage as the cheetah!! Cool door to let him in. So, that’s how you moniter how much food they are actually eating daily! I’d love to win free tickets. My birthday is coming up and I’d like to introduce the zoo to my West Texas niece and her friend who are new grad students to University of Houston! Go Optometry Students!
It is SO amazing to watch them.. and especially in this behind the scenes you can almost “hear” the cheetahs excitement, especially once they see that food bowl !! YUM !!
Thank you for providing these behind the scenes videos !! We LOVE the Zoo ..Thank you !
Wow, what magnificent creatures! I have a little brother and sister who I would love to take to the zoo. I must admit I have not been in a while, so I’m curious to see all that has changed and all the new additions. I have heard great things
Loved watching Kiburi eat, look at that happy excited face!
Wow those videos are really neat. Hehe animals are so funny when there’s food involved.
The last time we were at the zoo we stopped at the Cheetah area and were talking about how neat it is that there is a dog in there with them. We got to watch them interact with each other (a little) Hopefully you can and will do more behind the scene stuff. I love to talk to the animal caretakers when we are there. You always leave with lots of information!! Really Cool!! Thanks for doing what you do!!
The last time my fiance and I went to the zoo we got some great photos of a cheetah and the dogs. We can’t wait to go back! He gets me a zoo membership every Valentine’s day
I have to agree with the first poster, Brooke! This definitely reminds me of feeding the dogs at the kennels & shelters I’ve worked for! (Except a bit more wild!) Thanks for these behind-the-scenes videos, it really makes you feel like you are there & shows you another, more personal, side of the zoo! Thanks for sharing & keep up the great blogs!
Amazing!! They are like our very own pets. They come running to the plate so eager to eat!
Love the Houston zoo… one of the few zoos I’ve been to where I feel the animals are truly happy.
Are they fed just once a day?
Cheetahs at 3 months video: If you go to my flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/23947014@N08/sets/72157622299239014/ you can see two videos I took when the cheetahs were 3 months old.
Tiger Enrichment shots: I was at the zoo on 06.06.2009 and took the shots of the Enrichment Tiger talk and the Jaguars mating. On 05.21.2009 I got multiple shots of the Tiger with a large bone and Toby being active. The other two videos on my flickr account are from the zoo in Columbus, OH. I did not get a glimpse of Jack Hanna while I was there either day.
I’d love to be able to add more videos and shots to my flickr account and library and share them with the zoo. I am a member for the second year and am very interested in voluteering my photography skills by getting great shots of wildlife.
After much protest, I took my brother and his room-mate to the zoo in MN last September. He is now a zoo member. The week I visited in July this year, we went to 3 zoos (one outside of Minneapolis twice), 2 parades, fireworks, and a small circus where I rode an elephant. My brother and I also fed the giraffes at the Minneapolis Zoo’s new Africa exhibit.
Please feel free to contact me at 281-799-3039 if I can be of any assistance to you.
Great comments everyone! Yes, the setup if this barn is much like a dog kennel but a little more heavy duty. You also saw how the doors can be operated remotely so we don’t have to go in with them – this door design is in for all our carnivore buildings.
Glad to hear many of you are planning a trip to the zoo soon!
Well I also thought the dog was going to be eaten…
Great zoo would love to visit.
They are beautiful
There are lots of jobs at the zoo that don’t require an animal degree. This sounds like a great topic for a future blog…
Yes, just in the morning. Sometimes they get some bones or meat on exhibit later in the day or for training.
