Hi Cheryl,

Attwater's Prairie Chickens are a critically endangered species and are bred by permitted zoos and institutions under the direction of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to aid in their recovery. Therefore, eggs are not available to the public. Currently, there are less than 100 of these birds in the wild and they are most endangered bird in North America. You can find out more about this program on our website at http://www.houstonzoo.org/PrairieChicken/. I hope this answers your question.

I'm so sorry Janet, and we actually had that happen a few weeks ago. Just for no reaason, one adult toad passed. I'll ask my husband about the color of the throat. I just sent Rachel an email with pictures of my little guys - they have back legs now, and love climbing on top of their lettuce. They're so cute!

Oh, I think we've found the problem.... She was large with a cream throat. I had heard of that happening and hoped it wasn't the case. Sad.

Thanks for the chlorine warning! Whew, that could have been a huge mistake!

Janet,

Wow, that's a lot of toads. Another theory. Sometimes male toads will fight over females if they are trying to mate and will all pile on top of the female, sometimes pushing her under the water and drowing the female on accident. If it was a large toad with a cream throat it was probably a female. Not sure if this is what happended, but is plausible or it could be what you thought. Also, make sure you dont put too much of the hose water in the pond at once as it has chlorine in it. This could kill the little tadpoles. You can let water sit out for a couple of days and it will dechlorinate or you can go to the pet or fish store and pick up some dechlorinator (like Amquel)and throw a cap or two in there before you fill it up. Sounds like your backyard is toad central and where all of the toads want to be! Thanks for the updates Janet!

The really weird thing is that he was floating under the ramp. I'm just theorizing here, but there were more toads at the pond than ever last night (16 including the dearly departed) and I wondered if he just got crowded under the ramp and traffic didn't clear until it was too late.

You might be right about the water levels. I will fill it up a bit more this afternoon. The sides are sloped and the other guys regularly hop in and out, but more water certainly can't hurt. Good advice, thanks!

And thanks for the kind words, I'm fine, I just don't want it to happen again.
